Okay, Mothers, one of our favorite holidays is around the corner, and it will be one more holiday spent in isolation during quarantine. However, if you are fortunate like me, it will be the first time in several years when my offspring will be celebrating at home. Fantastic!

And with that, Happy Mother’s Day to all!

It is truly one of the two days all year when I take ‘a pass,’ meaning I excuse myself from typical stay-at-home mom duties (i.e., housekeeping, food prepping, laundry). Actually, I allow myself – give myself permission – to kick back and enjoy the moment.

What do Mothers Really Want?

I do not want breakfast in bed or sparkly jewels; what mothers really want is respect. Respect of their space, respect from their people, and respect for the selfless tasks completed in a year.

What mothers really want is time; time spent with the family on a quiet, lazy Sunday. No hustle, no bustle. Just an afternoon of calm spent together.

What mothers really want is no arguing or nagging in their presence. After all, it’s going to be a great day because I am blessed to have my boys home, and since it is one of two days that belong to me out of 365, let me enjoy this day in peace.

What mothers really want is acknowledgment for a job well done. Maybe throw in a ‘thank you’ or two and we can call it a day.

As for gifts, again, I am fortunate. I have always been the recipient of thoughtful gifts over the years, no complaints. For instance, small recycled baubles from the school fair (red, white, and blue bling was a thing one year), upgrading to real baubles for my charm bracelet as they got older, graduating to some meaningful pendants (their initials, their birthstones), an exceptionally thoughtful photo album dedicated to ”mom” moments, and finally to the BEST GIFT EVER.

A hooded sweatshirt emblazoned with their cherubic faces, yet oversized, nonetheless. Like a big hug from my boys every time I wear it. On the front is an image of them as little boys at our favorite vacation spot; on the back, grown-up versions of themselves in the same vacation place.

Could there be any gift more perfect for a Boy Mom? That’s a solid NO.

The Importance of Gifts on Mother’s Day

At an early age the boys realized their importance to me. It was easy really because I announced it all day every day. On Mother’s Day last year, they took my love for them to a whole new level and made it into a cuddly, loveable sweatshirt. Perfect.

However, these two are clever and thoughtful; they work in tandem when gifting for me. Usually, one takes on the role of “shopper/browser” while the other has the privilege of final approval, and I haven’t been disappointed yet.

While it is fun to anticipate what they will come up with this year now that we are together again, the fact they are home is enough this time around. A walk around the block? A moment of their time? A big burly hug? And this is truly what mothers really want; we are quite simple in our needs.
